Bendigo

Us ITF’s were invited to a weekend in Bendigo August 23rd/24th. Bendigo is a 2 hour drive North of Melbourne and is an old gold mining town. There are plenty of historical buildings, which we explored during a guided tour. Of course, one of them is an old hotel with its mandatory cabaret. Tom and Diana were our hosts on this weekend and we enjoyed their company a lot. There was also another couple from Canada staying with them. They were doing a teacher’s exchange in New South Wales and had joined our group for that weekend. As we found out, they’re from Kamloops, so of course we had plenty to talk about!
The local ITA organization organized a bush dance for us on the Saturday night. The Emu Bush Band played Australian bush music the whole night and we learned Australian line dancing. What seemed incredibly complicated at the beginning, went pretty smoothly after just a few drinks!
On Sunday, we went to “Confectionary Capers”, the best small museum in Australia. Starting out as a show room for school kids to experience physics hands-on, it’s now a maze of pullies and candy, toys and the quirkyness of the English language. A must-see to believe.

After coming back from our Bendigo weekend, we turned our computer on but oh no, the screen stayed black. Well, at least almost black. When we used a flashlight, we could still make out the writing, but without a flashlight, there was no way. After working with it that way for some days, friends of ours offered us the use of their extra laptop for the time we have left here in Australia. What a relief, because we had already tried to fix our computer for several months (is was pathetically slow and had all sorts of quirks) and we were not willing to spend any more time on it. Unfortunately, the problem with the slow internet connection hasn't gotten any better with our new computer. Everything takes forever and is really frustrating at times. That's why I haven't attached a video of the Bendigo bush dance to this entry. It would take all night to download.

Am Wochenende vom 23/24. August waren wir ITF’s nach Bendigo eingeladen, ca 2 Autostunden noerdlich von Melbourne. In dieser ehemaligen Goldgraeberstadt befinden sich zahlreiche historische Gebaeude, die wir waehrend einem Stadtrundgang erkundeten. Wie an den meisten solchen Orten, gehoert auch in Bendige ein ehemaliges Hotel mit seinem damals weit herum bekannten Cabarret zu den bekannten Gebaeuden. Wir waren waehrend dem Wochenende bei Tom und Diana einquartiert, deren Gastfreundschaft war in vollen Zuegen genossen. Ein Ehepaar, das in diesem Austauschjahr in New South Wales unterrichtet und deshalb noch nie an unsern Ausfluegen dabei war, war ebenfalls mit uns dort einquartiert. Wie sich herausstellte, wohnen die beiden normalerweise in Kamloops. So hatten wir viel Gespraechsstoff fuer diese Tage! Am Samstagabend hatte die lokale ITA Organisation ein Bush Dance organisiert. Die Emu Bush Band unterhielt uns den ganzen Abend mit echter australischer Buschmusik und wir lernten australisches Linedancing. Und was am Anfang viel zu kompliziert erschien, ging nach einigen Drinks wie von selbst.
Am Sonntag besuchten wir „Confectionary Capers“, the beste kleine Museum Australiens. Was am Anfang als Physik-Showraum fuer Schulkinder gedacht war, ist nun ein Labyrinth aus Suessigkeiten, Hebeln, Spielsachen und Spielereien mit der englischen Sprache. Ein Museum, das man sehen muss, um zu verstehen.

Nachdem wir von Bendigo zurueckkamen, wollten wir den Computer anschalten, aber Oh Schreck, der Bildschirm blieb schwarz. Das heisst, fast schwarz. Mit Hilfe einer Taschenlampe konnten wir gerade noch entziffern, was darauf stand. Nachdem wir so einige Tage mit dem Computer gearbeitet hatten, offerierten uns Freunde einen Computer, den sie im Moment nicht brauchen. Das freute uns riesig, vorallem, weil wir mit unserem Computer schon lange Probleme hatten (er war total langsam und benahm sich voellig irrational) und so wollten wir ihn nicht mehr flicken lassen. Leider hat sich unsere langsame Internetverbindung auch mit dem neuen Computer nicht verbessert. So ist arbeiten am Computer oft sehr frustrierend. Deshalb habe ich auch kein Video unseres Bush Dances beigefuegt. Dies herunterzuladen wuerde die ganze Nacht dauern.
