On Thursday morning I went to the city for an ITF (International Teaching Fellows) workshop for all the exchange teachers coming to the state of Victoria this year. There were quite a few people from Canada (mostly Ontario), from the US. (mostly from Colorado) and from England. I was the only rep. for Switzerland and a traitor at that (I wore my ‘Canada’ t-shirt). It was good to have such an orientation organized for us to give us a jump start into understanding the Australian school system. The ITF will also be organizing some weekends during the year for all of us, so I’m looking forward to meeting the international teachers again then.
In the meantime, Lucas, Fiona and Noemi were exploring the neighbourhood of Essendon where we live. It’s about a 15 minute walk to a nice shopping/restaurant strip on Keilor Road. There are 2 Thai restaurants, among others, cafés, fruit stands, bakeries and even a butchery. There’s also a bank, hairdressers and a Safeway. Noemi found some shoes for school, which must have an enclosed toe - no sandals allowed for safety reasons (just one step down from WCB steel-toe regulations which we could’ve used at home a few years ago and saved Fiona’s toe…)
In the afternoon the kids and Marianne used the public transport system to come and meet me in the city for a BBQ at a park. Easy, fast and efficient trams, trains and buses will take you quickly where you need to go, with no traffic jams or parking problems. We all had a good time at the park- the kids found some playmates and were busy, leaving us time to chat with the intl. teachers. Later in the evening we walked to Federation Square where they have a big outdoor movie screen and watched the Australian Open (Nadal lost to newcomer Tsonga).

Am Donnerstagmorgen war Mark in der City an einem Workshop des ITF (International Teaching Fellows) für alle diesjährigen Austauschlehrer, darunter Amerikaner, Kanadier, Iren, Engländer und wir als einzige Schweizer. Diese Organisation ist wirklich eine gute Sache. Sie bieten neben schulischer und privater Unterstützung während des Austauschjahres auch verschiedenste Ausflüge an und organisiert immer wieder Anlässe.
Lucas, Noemi, Fiona und ich erkundigten in der Zwischenzeit die Gegend um unser Haus. Etwa 15 Fussminuten von uns entfernt ist eine Einkaufsstrasse mit einem Safeway, kleinen Geschäften, Banken, und vielen Restaurants (2 Thai-Restaurants, mmmhhh). So haben wir nun endlich ein Bankkonto, etwas zu essen und sogar SCHULSCHUHE für Noemi. Sandalen sind nicht erlaubt, da diese zu gefährlich sind… schliesslich könnte einem Kind was auf einen Zeh fallen (aber da haben wir ja bereits bestens Erfahrung).
Am Nachmittag fuhren wir vier dann ebenfalls mit Bus und Zug in die City (das öffentliche Transportsystem hier ist super) und trafen Mark und die ganze Gruppe zu einem Picknick im Park. Es hatte einige Kinder dabei und einige wirklich interessante Personen (vor allem die Ehepartner der Lehrer…). Zum Abschluss waren wir noch auf dem Federation Square und schauten uns auf Grossleinwand einen Teil des Spieles Tsonga - Nadal an. Ein wunderschöner warmer Abend zum draussen sitzen.
